WHICH INSULATION?

There are two main types of insulation suitable for retrofitting to ceiling spaces: loose fill and batts. The most appropriate type of insulation to use will vary based on the type of construction and applicable R code requirements.

Batt Insulation

The two main choices in this category are Glasswool and Polyester. Both are insect resistant, fire safe and comply with the Building code of Australia. They can be easily removed and replaced by tradesmen as needed and won’t settle or blow around.

Guarantees are the lifetime of the home or for 50 years plus respectively.

Glasswool

Glasswool Batt insulation commonly referred to as “Fibreglass Batts” are made from recycled glass spun to create fibres and bonded together with a thermosetting resin. Ausbatts supplies and installs Knauf Earthwool Batts & Bradford Gold Batts which have been manufactured in Australia for over 50 years. Glasswool batts are non-combustible and are safe to use with halogen downlights when installed as per AS 3999.

Polyester

Tontine polyester batts are made from 100% recycled polyester fibre. They are non-toxic, non-allergenic and do not itch the skin with contact. They have a fire rating of 0 that complies with the BCA and AS/NZS 4859.1. They will not sag or lose their loft or bulk over time. This design characteristic ensures full performance is maintained over its 50+ year life.

Loose Fill Insulation

Usually manufactured from recycled newspaper, cellulose is shredded and pulverized into small particles. Chemicals are added to make it insect and fire resistant. It is then installed by blowing it into your roof pneumatically.

While the insulating R values are good requiring less thickness, it is heavier than comparable glasswool and polyester batts. The heavier weight may be a consideration, particularly with older ceilings that may have lost some structural soundness.

Loose fill when installed to higher R rating may obscure ceiling joists and thereby increase the risks associated with working and moving around in the roof space.

Fire Safety

A Joint position statement has been issued between the Fire and Emergency Services Authority (FESA), Department of Commerce (Energy Safety), Western Power and the National Electrical & Communications Association (NECA), on the safe use of 240 volt and extra low voltage (less than 50 Volts) dichroic (halogen) down lights to reduce the risk of fire.
